What is a Funnel in Marketing?

Definition of a Funnel in Marketing:

A marketing funnel is a model that shows the stages potential customers pass through as they move from first awareness of a product to the final purchase decision. It refers to the structured progression of customer interest in which potential buyers gradually develop awareness, evaluate available options, and decide whether to purchase a product or service. At the early stage many individuals become aware of a brand or offering, while only a smaller portion continue toward consideration and purchase. The term marketing funnel describes the pattern of customer movement through these decision stages and does not refer to the advertising channels, promotional tools, or platforms used to attract potential customers.

Example:

Imagine a company selling running shoes online.

About 10,000 people see an advertisement on Instagram and become aware of the shoes. Around 1,000 of them click the ad and visit the website to learn more about the product. Out of those visitors, nearly 300 people read reviews and compare prices before deciding. Finally, about 50 customers complete the purchase and buy the shoes.

This process shows a marketing funnel, where many potential customers enter at the awareness stage and fewer continue through interest, consideration, and purchase until the final buying decision.
