Components of Marketing Information System

The main components of a marketing information system are internal records, marketing intelligence, marketing research, and marketing decision support.

Internal records give the system a regular base of business information. These records may include sales figures, customer orders, invoices, stock movement, website activity, campaign responses, and past customer transactions. They help the business understand what has already happened in the market.

Marketing intelligence adds outside market awareness. It includes competitor prices, new product launches, customer behavior changes, industry news, distributor feedback, and market trends. This component helps the business notice changes beyond its own internal records.

Marketing research gives focused answers to specific marketing questions. A business may use surveys, interviews, observation, experiments, or customer studies to understand a problem such as falling sales, weak product demand, poor customer response, or a new market opportunity.

Marketing decision support helps managers compare information before taking action. It may include reports, dashboards, forecasting tools, customer segments, performance summaries, and data models that make marketing information easier to review and use.

These components work together because each one adds a different type of information. Internal records show business performance, intelligence shows outside market movement, research explains specific problems, and decision support helps convert information into practical marketing choices.

The component structure becomes useful when the information is accurate, updated, and connected to real marketing needs. If one component is missing or weak, managers may depend on incomplete information and make decisions without seeing the full market picture.
